RHEDI Programs provide integrated abortion training with the following components:

REQUIRED TRAINING

A required (opt-out) rotation in abortion and contraception training, which includes clinical and didactic experience with the following:

  • First trimester abortion care (medication and aspiration)
  • Pre-abortion counseling
  • Post-abortion follow-up care
  • Contraceptive counseling
  • Contraceptive care including LARC insertion and removal
  • Ultrasound for pregnancy identification and gestational dating
  • Early pregnancy loss (miscarriage management)
  • Pregnancy options counseling

High volume abortion training site where residents rotate to obtain a high volume of aspiration procedural training

On-site abortion training and provision with medication abortion and 1st trimester aspiration/EPL provision and training integrated into the residency training site(s) so residents can learn abortion care provision in a family medicine setting

Psychosocial training about abortion, which includes the meaning of abortion for the resident-learners and the women served and their families. This should also include addressing the psychosocial components of EPL/miscarriage management for patients and their families.

Reproductive Justice approach to teaching and providing full-spectrum reproductive health care, which considers the social, economic, historical and personal factors that impact access and choice in health care.

The expectation is that all residents will participate in the RHEDI rotation, except for residents who opt-out, and those interested will have additional opportunities to train to competency.

ADDITIONAL TRAINING

RHEDI Programs may offer different types of additional training opportunities for residents such as extra training slots for PGY 1, 2, 3 residents beyond the required rotation at the high volume or family medicine reproductive health clinics. Some programs also offer added didactic sessions for interested residents, integrate the CREATE curriculum, organize journal clubs, etc.

GUIDELINES FOR OPT-OUT RESIDENTS

Every resident is expected to gain experience in nonjudgmental pregnancy options counseling, pre-abortion counseling, post-abortion care and contraceptive counseling.

The expectation is that all residents will receive instruction in the above-mentioned areas. Residents may choose to opt-out of aspects of the rotation for personal reasons. Residents who are considering out opting-out should meet with their faculty to discuss the decision and make a plan for an alternate curriculum. Some may “partially opt-out” and choose to participate in some aspects of the training but not all.
