We are sickened by the Supreme Court’s rollback of the constitutional protections established by the Roe and Casey decisions. This assault on human rights will specifically criminalize pregnant people and will further restrict the personal autonomy of millions of Americans. We anticipate it will also increase morbidity and mortality associated with pregnancy, especially among marginalized and disadvantaged communities that already bear the burdens of reproductive inequity and injustice.
We know that abortion restrictions, rooted in racism and misogyny, have severe effects on the health of people with the capacity for pregnancy, their families, and their . Today’s outrageous ruling will perpetuate and uphold patterns of white supremacy, racism, and gender oppression that have inflicted centuries of state-sanctioned violence on BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, low-income, young people, and rural communities for generations.
We are outraged by the Court’s decision to overturn a half-century of legal protections and to endanger millions of Americans seeking essential health services. Our new reality calls for innovative strategies to ensure that we can meet the increased demand for full-spectrum sexual and reproductive health (SRH) care. For RHEDI, that means resisting laws and policies that criminalize patients; new interstate collaborations with abortion educators, providers, and abortion funds; fighting barriers to telehealth abortion care; advance provision of medication abortion; and support for those who have self-managed their care. We must also work to ensure that family medicine clinicians and residency programs have the training, support, and resources they need to care for both local and interstate patients.
All people deserve equitable access to abortion, contraception, and full-spectrum pregnancy care. They have a human right to medical care that is free from judgment, stigma, racism, xenophobia, and legal barriers. As we move forward together, RHEDI will continue striving to make full-spectrum SRH care more accessible through a diverse and abortion-trained family medicine workforce.
In Solidarity,
The RHEDI Staff
