RHEDI Welcomes 3rd Cohort of the Resident Scholars Program for Workforce Diversity

We are thrilled to introduce the nine exceptional residents who make up the third cohort of the Resident Scholars Program for Workforce Diversity (RSPWD). This year-long experience for BIPOC family medicine residents, predominantly those under-represented in medicine (URM), is designed to support scholars’ development as future leaders in the field. Scholars will have an opportunity to develop relationships with BIPOC mentors and other experts who incorporate a Reproductive Justice framework into clinical care, research, leadership, and teaching. Through participation in workshops, attendance at professional conferences, and sponsorship of elective training opportunities, scholars will develop fundamental skills related to abortion provision and to advancing SRH care in family medicine.

Dr. Mariela Cabrera – Boston Medical Center Family Medicine Residency

Dr. Cabrera is a second year Family Medicine Resident at Boston Medical Center. She was born in Guatemala and has a strong passion for caring for Latinx/e and underserved communities. Through various research projects and educational teachings, she has been engaged in work regarding contraceptive management, preeclampsia prevention, and abortion care. She believes access to abortion care is a human right, and joined RSPWD to expand her efforts in advocacy and clinical care under a reproductive justice framework. She is committed to bringing sexual and reproductive health services to her patients and dedicated to becoming an abortion care provider.

Dr. Catherine Casado-Pabon – Albert Einstein College of Medicine Residency in Family Medicine

Catherine Casado-Pabon is a rising third year family medicine resident from the Bronx, New York. She is a first generation physician deeply committed to the tenets of social medicine, health equity, and reproductive justice. She is interested in providing high-quality healthcare to the people who need it most, particularly comprehensive reproductive healthcare, and is looking forward to continuing her training within the RHEDI curriculum.

Dr. Sayeeda Chowdhury, MPH – Institute for Family Health Harlem Residency in Family Medicine

Dr.Chowdhury is dedicated to serving a diverse, underserved population as a full spectrum reproductive and sexual healthcare provider. As a Muslim Bangladeshi American, she grew up with little to no representation in reproductive health spaces and often didn’t recognize the nuanced discussions needed around spiritual and cultural aspects to reproductive and sexual health. She has taught sexual health workshops in public high schools, facilitated discussions with Muslim women and gender non-confirming individuals, and volunteered as a sexual assault and intimate partner advocate in emergency departments. Her future career in family medicine envisions to build on those efforts and contribute to the movement for reproductive justice for all.

Dr. Laura Cuevas, MBA – Scripps Mercy Chula Vista Family Medicine Residency Program

Dr. Cuevas is passionate about full-spectrum health care for marginalized communities with a special interest in reproductive health care and prenatal care. As a second-year resident in the Women’s Health Area of Concentration (AOC), she is receiving additional clinical training with pregnancy options counseling, prenatal care, LARCs, OB ultrasound and pregnancy loss management. Dr. Cuevas discovered her interest in abortion care by being part of Medical Students for Choice (MSFC) and completing a family planning elective in medical school. She is currently working with the creation of an early pregnancy loss clinic at a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) and incorporating content in abortion care within her residency education curriculum. Dr. Cuevas hopes RSPWD will allow her to continue expanding her skills in full-spectrum reproductive health while working along other BIPOC providers with similar passions.

Dr. Dreana Jett – University of California San Francisco Family and Community Medicine Residency Program

Dr. Jett is a second-year family medicine resident whose advocacy and community work has centered on the intersection of sexual and reproductive health care, anti-racism, and LGBTQ+ care. She hopes to create safe environments for marginalized communities accessing abortion services. She has developed a passion for using public health and policy change to dismantle systemic racism and achieve health equity. Dr. Jett looks forward to integrating abortion and centering Reproductive Justice in her future practice.

Dr. Jillian Millares, MS – Swedish Hill Family Medicine Residency

Dr. Millares is passionate about building and maintaining trust with marginalized communities to ensure patient-centered care. She strives for her clinical career to be filled with open, nonjudgmental conversations spanning the vast spectrum of reproductive healthcare, from options counseling to postpartum health to gender affirming care. On a community advocacy level, she hopes to critically examine and improve school based sexual education and access to reproductive healthcare to adolescents. She is excited to build her network and be part of efforts aimed to amplify quality reproductive and abortion care to all communities.

Dr. Sherry Reddix, MA, MPH – Tufts University School of Medicine Family Medicine Residency Program

Dr. Reddix’s upbringing in Mississippi and identity as a Black woman remains integral to her raison d’être – to dismantle systemic injustice inside and outside of the exam room. Her previous experience with the Medical Students for Choice entailed spearheading a webinar series that explores reproductive health inequities among Black women. Her current focus is on creating a partnership between a local doula organization, the Birthworkers of Color Collective, and her family medicine residency program. By centering reproductive justice, cultivating an intersectional lens, and remaining authentic to herself, Dr. Reddix aims to heal Black women and the communities that we fortify and nourish.

Dr. Karla Tytus – West Suburban Medical Center Family Medicine Residency

Karla Tytus is a PGY-2 currently living in Oak Park, IL. She was born and raised in Los Angeles, CA, completed college in Rhode Island, and medical school (Meharry Medical College) in Tennessee. During medical school, she participated in Medical Students for Choice, including spearheading its Unmuted Reproductive Justice Webinar series along with fellow Sherry Reddix. She plans to practice full-spectrum family medicine with an emphasis/passion in Women’s health, particularly family planning, abortion, prenatal care, and preventative health care. Her passion lies in health care for marginalized communities, Black and Latinx communities especially.
